Do you like your boss? Do you able to work closely with your boss? Can you express your opinion easily to your boss? Your career future is very much depending on your relationship and performance with your immediate manager.
Set the rule
You need to know how your boss wants the thing to be done. I know you may be the expert in your field. When you join a new organization, it is best to adapt and then change, not change and ask your boss to adapt. Have a discussion with your boss in the office or during meal times will be a great start to have better understand how your boss want you to get thing done. For example, some boss like you to give them a report by end of every day, some may just need a weekly report. Some may need to have a details report on what you had done in a day; some may just want to have a one line update for each major project on your hand.
Manage the time
You are just one of the staff reporting to your boss, so don’t spend 100% of their time on your 1% problem. Make use of their time effectively to help you solve problem, not discussing about the problem. Although many management book said manager need to spend more time with their staffs, but in actual fact, they may have many duties and responsibilities to follow up beside your issue. Next time, if you need to have a long discussion with your boss, please arrange it early. If it is some small matter which can be discuss during lunch, you can ask your boss for lunch to discuss it during lunch time.
Give him a solution, not the problem.
The company recruits you to solve problem for the company, not create problem for the company. In certain occasion, I need to talk to my staff and said they do not meet the company expectation and will prefer them to looking out for a better fit company. You need to be a solution for your company, not a problem for your company. If you think you have a problem and like to seek some advices, prepare some possible solution before heading to your boss room. Your boss will be grateful if you do that.
Having a good relationship with your boss is vital for your career success. If you can be a solution provider, know your boss expectation and get thing done, you will have a bright future in the company.
