Choose your boss before joining the company

In general, your future immediate boss will conduct the interview together with the HR manager. You need to pay full attention in the interview to decide can you click with your future boss or not. It will be too late to regret after you join the company. Try to have more discussion with your potential boss, no need to focus on the HR manager. As long as your new boss likes you, you will get hired immediately.

Understand what your boss really wants from you

Now you had join the company and you find out that your boss don’t really like you or not happy about your performance. Make sure you have a one to one discussion to discuss the yearly, quarterly goals for you. This is also an opportunities for you to share your thought with your immediate manager on how you feel about the company, and your boss. I really encourage you to share your worry and concerns about the company direction. As a boss, they hardly hear this kind of feedback from their staffs. Most of the staffs will keep quiet and give simple response to the boss questions.

If you cannot click with your boss, change to another boss.

If you make mistake in selecting your future boss and you really can’t understand what your boss want from you, it will be good to report to another boss. There are 2 ways you can do it. If you existing organization is big, you can request for internal transfer which you will need to wait for a while due to current economic climate. But if you really good, your company will definitely want to keep you forever. Alternatively, you can look outside for a new job instead of working for internal transfer. If you think your previous boss may affect your career in the organization, looking out may be a better solution.

Remember, there are no 100% perfect bosses in this world. As long as you can get someone who is able to coach and guide you along the way, you should appreciate it. It is not easy to get a good mentor or coach in our career. If you get one, make sure you really do something in return for their wisdom and guidance.
